Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Layton, UT Trigonometry tutoring
The student and I covered functions with fractions today and worked more on function rules. He struggled most with finding common denominators and adding and subtracting fractions. He picked up certain techniques very quickly though. I left him with a problem to be completed by tomorrow night's session. He and I went over spelling and reading short passages today. He struggled most with figuring out the specific sounds that certain letter combinations made. He continues to be very shy which sometimes makes it difficult to convey concepts to him properly. I am hopeful that after a few more sessions he may come out of his shell.

Tonight we continued to prepare for the student's math exam which is tomorrow. I provided more supplemental study problems on operations of functions and combining functions. We also worked on some distributive property examples, as this is a key step in subtracting functions; something he was struggling on. I threw in a few extra problems for him to study, and made sure that he understood all four operational properties with functions. I am confident he will do well tomorrow. I left him with a few pointers, and to make sure to draw arrows when he is distributing terms in functions.

The student worked on the recursive formula and the pigeonhole principle. She's getting better at the recursive formula, so hopefully when she starts the semester, she'll already have mastered the subject.

We continued going through concepts from the pre-algebra diagnostic test in which the student performed the lowest. Today we worked on operations and properties. She especially struggled to understand absolute value. We also practiced with combining like terms and simplifying expressions. She grasped problems with fewer variables, but struggled with problems involving multiple variables and exponents, and still struggles with adding/ subtracting positive and negative numbers. I will be sending her flashcards to continue practicing with the covered concepts.

This was my first session with this student, so we reviewed what he knew with the basics in multiplication and division. We also worked on adding and subtracting mixed number fractions. He understood the adding of fractions but has not worked on subtraction until last Wednesday, so he was struggling with it. We'll work on that in our next session.
