Session Summaries by German Tutors

Layton, UT German tutoring
The student and I first reviewed the material we had covered before the Thanksgiving break: personal pronouns in accusative case and prepositions that take the accusative. After that, we went through the verbs werden and wissen and did exercises on the difference between kennen and wissen. In the end, we introduced new vocabulary and did reading as well as translating. As homework, she needs to review the conjugation of both kennen and wissen and memorize the new vocabulary.

The student and I have been going over exercises in his textbook and workbook, and I have also brought in some extra materials. In the first two lessons, we worked on using modal verbs in the past tense. We also worked on giving directions. The student learns the grammar concepts quickly. His biggest struggle seems to be vocabulary, which is understandable after not having taken German for a few years. We spend time in each class going over vocabulary and also reviewing vocabulary concepts that he might have missed.

The student and I worked on a persuasive essay. Her teacher assigned the topic of vaccination and asked the kids to take a stance and support their argument. She chose to go out of the box and argue against vaccination in order to stretch her writing ability and become a better thinker. We went over what makes a good intro and how to make a good thesis statement, as well as how to conclude. These were two major areas she identified she struggles with, but she showed a much better understanding after we worked through it.

We covered the Nom. and Acc. case system. We will be continuing the last of it next session. Also, we covered some nouns. He is struggling with the subject and the object of a sentence, which I will continue to go over with him. I told him to keep in mind the plural form of a noun is always "die" in both the Nom. and Acc. case. *Yes. I sent him home with homework. He was great in his tutoring. I can't wait to see him next time, where we will go over the end to the Acc. case system and characteristics and emotions.

We covered reflexive verbs together, going down a list of all of them and making sample sentences with each of them. The students picked up the verbs very quickly and often made comments or had questions.
