He already knew the product and quotient rule fairly well but I saw an incredible improvement in his understanding of the chain rule. After he understood this rule, it was quite easy for him to overcome his misunderstandings of other derivative rules such as logarithmic and exponential.

We did a brief review of finding local extrema using derivatives and then we dove into related rates problems. We did several related rates problems. We went through the first two together and then I let the student try them out on her own. Related rates are essentially word problems for calculus, so a lot of the learning is just figuring out how to decipher the question. We discussed strategies for decipher related rate problems and setting up the problem. We went through the basic algorithm for tackling any related rates problems and discussed variations on this algorithm depending on the specific problem. Once we went through several examples, the student started to catch on. She definitely has a solid understanding of basic related rates problems. We also discussed briefly the importance of learning these types of problems and how they are relevant to the real world.

During this session, the student and I worked on two subjects: calculus and computer science. For most of the session, our focus was on implicit differentiation (calculus). For the later part of the session, we worked on understanding various sorting algorithms (computer science). For the implicit differentiation, the student actually demonstrated a good understanding of the calculus concepts. The area that she struggled with was simplifying the more complicated formulas algebraically and also making small mistakes like forgetting to copy exponents. For the computer science portion, she seemed to struggle a bit with conceptualizing the pseudocode for the algorithms. Once she witnessed some examples of the algorithms step-by-step, she quickly grasped the patterns. She is exceptionally interested in both topics and has a genuine desire to learn. With some practice, I have no doubt she will master the topics we studied.

We continued our study of the mean value theorem and the special zero derivative case, and I clarified some things for the student. We also covered interval notation and how to write down when a function is increasing or decreasing. Continuing our study of critical points, and trying to remember there are two ways for a point to be critical, and using my adjacent points trick for determining max and min, we did a lot of repetition on problems to get good at it. She has no problem with the derivatives, but sometimes shifting the problem around until it is in a form she knows how to deal with can be an issue. This is why we will continue to do a lot of practice.

We discussed where the student is having problems with the class. She said that math has been hard for her in the past. It also seems like there may be some anxiety that is causing her problems on the test. They are currently working on the first and second derivative tests and optimization. We reviewed the concepts and worked through a few examples. She seemed to be more comfortable with the material after we walked through a few examples.
