The student and I continued our overview of many types of problem-solving techniques from the online bank of practice problems. We started today in ACT science, and I gave him several problems in biology, which he understood well. I concluded that he had good reading and graph and chart comprehension, and after an hour of bio, we moved on to math. We started in algebra: expressions, moved into algebra: matrices, and ended up in trigonometry. I intend to continue with this when we meet for the last time on Friday, with some other looks at whatever topics he might identify from looking at problems in the ACT guide.

This session, we went over a worksheet relating to statistics for health care research. We covered basic information, including statistics (mean, mode, median, variance, standard deviation, etc.), experimental and control groups, demographic variables, and level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval/ratio, experimental). Many of the responses required interpretation of data that was presented. The student is very detailed and seeks total understanding.

The student is making excellent progress. Her memos this week all began with a topic sentence, which lets her bosses know immediately what the communication is about. All of her introductory phrases were correctly followed by commas. Comma splice errors also have been reduced. Although she occasionally omits an article, that error is not as frequent as it had been. Parallelism also is not as frequent a problem. She still struggles a bit with commas for items in a series, especially the Oxford comma, which does not exist in her native language. She is writing a series of personnel evaluation memos at work, and we generated a list of synonyms for words she uses often to have as a resource.

We covered all three sections of the test, focusing mainly on logic games. Student is fast at the logical reasoning/reading comprehension and has a good sense of how to solve these questions. Although the games do take her longer than other problems, she is getting better at seeing which strategy to use. I will be assigning homework for the week by email, and the student will take a diagnostic test this week and email me the results.

We worked on CARS today. We discussed the difference between passive, active, and purposeful reading and practiced purposeful reading with a satirical work about bees by Mark Twain. The student is next going to do the physical science and biology diagnostic over the weekend, and we are going to look over those together on Monday.
