Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a great session tonight. We went over his case brief and analysis. We talked a lot about clauses and comma usage. He did a great job identifying the sentences he struggled with and finding solutions to make his writing more clear and concise. I left him with a handout on clauses and subject-verb agreement. For next week, he is going to brief and outline three cases on first amendment rights in schools."
"Student 1 and I reviewed citations rules. I gave him a packet about avoiding plagiarism in the college setting, and we looked at a sample research paper. We also discussed introducing sources and weaving quotes into academic discourse. Student 2 and I reviewed some basic organizational and study skills, like setting reminders on electronic devices and using a colored whiteboard for studying. We also determined he would need help learning to write literary analysis papers and outlined a paper together. We also planned to work on identifying themes in literature and used movies to practice establishing the central message of a work. Student 3 and I discussed time management and study skills. We determined it would help to write his tasks down every day and to devote thirty minutes each night to his four academic subjects. This would break projects and test review into smaller, more manageable, units of study. We reviewed ninth grade literature information, including fragments, formal voice, and parallel structure."
"Reviewed reading and writing techniques. Also, reviewed and compared/contrast both opinion and narrative writing pieces."
"The student demonstrated that she is grasping writing concepts well. A few of her previous errors with articles and verb tenses existed in the work we reviewed today, and she is beginning to use parallelism correctly. Today we discussed organization of her memos, all of which so far have been in chronological order with the main point often in the middle or the end of the message. I recommended that she consider putting the most important information first and then provide details, so her bosses can get the information they need quickly. We practiced rewriting some of her old memos in the new order. The last one she did herself, demonstrating she grasped the concept. I also provided a resource on memo writing."
"The student did an awesome job of staying on task today! He completed his spelling homework and finished up his math homework. He also worked on flashcards and wrote the summary for the piece on animal adaptations."
"The student did great today. She had a writing project, free reading, and a geography quiz, and really stayed on track when it came to focusing on her work. She did a great job getting her vocab homework done early this week, and preparing for the geography quiz early. She also received back several tests this week and is doing great! Most of her grades are now A's and B's, and she is improving all the time. We spent most of the tutoring session working on writing and reading. I helped her with her spelling and grammar, and for the second half of the session she read her free reading project book out loud, and I helped her with any words she did not know."
