Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Lauderhill, FL Writing tutoring
For the first student, we spent the first part of the session discussing the novel that he is reading, "The Life of Pi". These were discussion questions that I prepared for him that are geared towards the eventual outcome of his reading; the essay that he will eventually be required to write once school is in session. So instead, I had him log on to a website to get a practice essay topic to work on this upcoming week. For the last part of the session, I gave him some practice questions to complete regarding writing; paragraph and sentence structure. His other homework is to complete reading the novel. As for the second student, I went over with him the homework that was given regarding main idea and supporting details. He had some trouble with this, so we will review again next week. The topic that I focused on with him this week was "Theme". We went through a PowerPoint presentation that I had done as an introduction and completed a worksheet to practice the skill that he just learned. As reinforcement, he will go on to complete a few exercises in recognizing the theme. I also gave him a writing prompt for homework, with a rough draft due next week.

The student had trouble doing the homework assignment I had left for him to do. We discussed what the problems were in doing the assignment and planned out a better way for him to do the homework assignment for this week. We also discussed possible prompt topics and how he would outline his essay for those specific topics. No scores/grades I assigned the student to go to his public library and select a location as close to the center as possible. This way the setting is a bit more similar to that of a classroom, however distractions will take place and it will give him the best opportunity to practice focusing on the task at hand.

In today's session, I began by introducing her to a SAT Essay prompt. I talked about the format of the essay and the basics of how to begin approaching this particular component of the exam. We read the prompt together, then I gave her time to practice writing an essay. Essay organization and pacing are still her biggest struggles with timed writing (which is very normal), so that's definitely something to continue improving on with practice. After time was up, we went over the essay and discussed its strengths and weaknesses. I can really see that she has a strong grasp of specificity and detail, and I know that she is capable as a writer. Once we wrapped up this activity, I had her ask me some of her questions about high school English class expectations, and I gave her some final, general tips about how to make a good first impression as a writer. We then closed by discussing a couple of different books and looking over the ALA online list of banned books. I also let her know that if she ever needs me to help look over an essay for her, she can email me.

The client is working on his proposal for his dissertation. Like many students, he has a lot of information to pull together and lots of criteria to satisfy. He wanted to a fresh perspective. We discussed his research questions, methodology, variables and literature review. We came up with strategies and clarified some points to help him keep moving in the right direction. We made sure to consider the university rubric and advice from his chair so that his final product will be acceptable and in addition to being a viable and interesting project.

We finished writing an exit paragraph that the student had already written an outline for. Even though it was one paragraph, we broke it up into five component parts, including topic sentence, detail #1, detail #2, detail #3, and a conclusion. We focused on clarity of sentences.

The student worked on 3 of his essays, one of which was synthesis on the question of the penny, one was a rhetorical analysis of a scientific writing, and one was a persuasive essay on the function of polite speech in society. He seems more efficient as a writer and has been more able to draw upon examples and evidence to support a claim. His only difficulty is time management, but overall seems to be getting better on this too.
