We reviewed the rest of the problems. We worked through electrolytic splitting of water and water fireplace half-reactions. I concluded by giving him a difficult problem and the student got it exactly correct. I think he is ready for his test.

The student and I reviewed electrochemistry, including oxidation versus reduction process, cathode versus anode, and the role of salt bridge in neutralizing positive and negative ions. We learned to identify the process in each half reaction, balance the whole reaction by element and by charge, calculate the cell potential and the change in Gibbs Free Energy, determine whether a reaction is spontaneous, compare the strength of metals based on single displacement reactions, and calculate the time taken to plate out an amount of metal using a certain current level. We will wrap up the review on Wednesday.

Today, we covered convex-concave mirrors, focal length, EM spectrum review, color, and the wavelength-frequency-speed relationship of EM radiation. The student understands the material fairly well. She has a physics exam tomorrow, so this was preparation. Some strategies and skills were discussed, and although little memorization is required, she may memorize a few key values.

We met to review for the student's upcoming ACS final. We decided to devote most of the time on nuclear chemistry and organic chemistry, two sections his professor did not have much time to cover. We went over what makes an element radioactive, the different types of decay, and how to determine which type a decay an atom will undergo. We finished nuclear chemistry by going over half life reactions. We then covered organic chemistry nomenclature. We went over how to name alkanes, alkenes and alkynes, and how to determine the longest branch length and precedence of naming functional groups and side chains.

The student and I worked on some review for Chemistry. We started off looking working on Redox reactions. Understanding half reactions was a bit difficult for him, but the problems really helped him. We then continued with some review of the course as a whole. I believe his teacher is beginning to prepare them for the regents examination. So, I will be following suit as well. He also told me that he got a 97 on one of his exams before break, so we were very happy about that.
