Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Lauderhill, FL Latin tutoring
The student did a pretty admirable job with the adjectives tonight; he is mostly consistent in the understanding that some endings go with certain types and not with others. The main factor holding him back has been his vocabulary, since adjective use depends on noun gender. I'd suggest that he practice with some online resources to strengthen those definitions and genders.

The student and I spent this session reviewing for his final Latin exam. At his request, we deconstructed the 4 types of conditionals and discussed how to identify each type in translation. We then worked through a set of translation sentences to review other key grammar concepts and vocabulary from the course. The student approached the questions with confidence and focus. He has a firm grasp of deponents, participles, indirect commands and ablative absolutes. He is working to identify purpose clauses, but after some discussion of purpose clause indicators and translation formulas, he was able to identify and translate a purpose clause in translation. I wish him all the best on his final exam and in all of his future endeavors!

During today's session, the student and I worked through a sight-reading passage (Pyramus and Thisbe) which he did quite well with and just missed a few conjunction/preposition-type words when he got going a little quickly! For the rest of the session, we worked together to review an online assignment he had been given over break. The assignment presented him with a number of English phrases that he then had to give in correct Latin. This was a tricky assignment (as there could be numerous correct answers but only one accepted answer), but it did work well to reinforce the concept of comparative and superlative adjectives, the five noun declensions, and irregular comparison of adjectives. We managed to discuss all 35 questions, and I additionally emailed him corrections after the session. I encouraged him to look over once again both irregular comparative and superlative adjectives as well as more standard adjectives ending in -er and -eus, which have slightly different rules.

The student did quite well today. I am somewhat dismayed to the degree to which he's become rusty on much of his command of Latin. He really had to struggle to come up with the correct answers with which he eventually did come up. I'm confident, though, our regularly tutoring with each other over this summer will stand him in good stead to jump back into his studies of Latin next school year. I let him know he can put the summer review worksheet past me, so that I can review his work and give him pointers, if needed, before he turns in Section One. He's going to do that sometime this week, he told me.

Today we covered third and fourth conjugations with translation. The student has eased into understanding how to create rules for conjugation each tense, and how to translate them as well. The student was very patient and we had a very productive last session. He has spent the summer reviewing nouns, adjectives, and verbs. He has done an exceptional job and now has a study guide to review before school starts, and to use during school.

Today we did a quick review of first and second declension, which the student did very well on. Then we started translating a passage I gave him, which he had trouble applying his declension skills to translating, so I'll give him more practice.
