Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

Lauderhill, FL HSPT tutoring
We reviewed relevant math strategy (situations in which to plug in numbers) and applied it to problems throughout two practice math sections (both grid-in and multiple-choice). Along the way, we went over the concepts in-depth (e.g. average * # of things = total, sequences, special right triangles, groupings of variables, and more). The student caught onto things very quickly and will only need to consistently expose herself to as many problems as she can find. I recommended that she do a timed practice section of math on her own, as well as to practice problems using an online tool to continually refresh her skills. She should also do at least 10-15 problems from the packet I had previously given to her.

Today the student did a review of medium-level math. I had her circling all problems in previous 6 practice tests of medium difficulty, for repeated review. I also brought a grammar review DVD for her to watch.

This was my first time seeing the student in over a week. He had clearly studied his vocab words, as he did much better with the words that had given him trouble last month. However, he still has some trouble comprehending long passages. We took some time to read a passage sentence by sentence and discussed how we could find the meanings of some difficult metaphors. He always seems to feel a little more comfortable with the questions than with the passage in isolation, which is something I believe will be useful to him as we move forward. As a result of this, he managed to answer a vast majority of the questions accurately once we had first discussed the passage together. After working through that particular piece, I presented him with three shorter passages and their corresponding questions. He was able to understand the sections and answer almost every question without help. In summary, I'm very pleased with his progress on this front, though we do still need to work on reading and comprehending longer passages. As his AP History exam is coming up next week, I did not assign him much work, but I did ask him to complete a long reading passage on his own and begin examining the writing section by completing a short grammar practice section. We will talk about both of those and continue to practice comprehending long passages when we meet again on Sunday.
