In our first session, the student and I talked a little bit about what chemistry entails and multiple aspects of it. We started with going over the units of measurement and the differences between the metric system and US customary units. This included meters vs. feet, liters vs. gallons, etc.) and the conversion within each system. We then started by working on using conversion factors with units and how to manipulate them to get the desired units (for example, converting miles to feet or to kilometers). We used three practice problems, one of which had a rate, to illustrate this point. As we worked we talked about how to set it up so. We had a brief experiment about the principles of density, demonstrated by a basketball (less dense), lacrosse ball (more dense), and a bucket of water, and talked about our observations. To finish, we also did a baking soda/vinegar "explosion" with food coloring to touch on concepts of chemical/physical reactions, solutions/mixtures, and limiting factors. He was left with a section of reading to be quizzed on briefly on Friday to examine his ability to take notes and independently study material.

In preparation for the student's test on Thursday, we reviewed all the aspects of stoichiometry that he has covered in class. Particular attention was paid to percent yield and limiting reactants. For a long time during this session he was really struggling to sort out which approaches to use for each type of problem, but I continued to review the process, and near the end of the session it clicked for him. After that point, he was able to correctly solve all of the problem types and explain the significance of each step. I assigned him some extra reading out of the textbook to do in the morning before the test to refresh his memory. At the level of comprehension he demonstrated to me he should do very well on the test.

We worked on some problem sets that applied Hess' Law to calculating heats of reaction; delta H= H prod-H reac; concepts of enthalpy of reactions, exothermic vs endothermic, state and phase changes. Some of the questions seemed a little tricky, but the student thought them through, and with a little bit of help on definitions and concept applications, sorted them out. We got results from his last chemistry test and he got an 86, which brings his grade up to a solid B. It's good to see that we're making progress!
