Today we reviewed for the student's biology test. We talked about what her teacher said would be on the test which included cell transport, organelles, cell division, stem cells and cell differentiation. The student and I need to work on communicating what will be on her tests and quizzes so that I can better prepare her for them. I also learned this evening that she has access to learning objectives worksheets for every test. From now on we will be using those as a guide for her studying so that I have a better idea of what material is being covered in class. We also talked about the importance of reading her chapters, knowing her vocabulary, and using her notes from class to study. She also says that she has a hard time focusing during her tests so we will figure out some strategies that she can use to help with her anxiety in those situations.

We went over the properties of water. We covered heat capacity, polarity, hydrogen bonding, the structure of water, the density of water and ice, and I introduced the topics of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. We talked about dehydration synthesis (polymerization) and how it required for monomers to form polymers. Student needed guidance with atomic structure and heat capacity, but appeared comfortable with the topic after talking about it.

Today the student and I had our final session before his cumulative final exam. We covered the subjects that the student was still unsure about, and I had the student answer practice problems to gauge where he was with regards to certain subjects. I ended the session with a brief lecture about a couple of key processes that occur inside of the cell (mainly DNA replication, transcription, and translation, but touching on cellular respiration and photosynthesis as well).

We covered rock types and formation in the earth. We also covered minerals, metallurgy and alloys. After this, we talked briefly about the endocrine system in human physiology, specifically adrenaline, glucagon, insulin and oxytocin. We will cover this more. The student was great to work with. I am hoping once we get past this topic, we can move on to topics that she finds more interesting. She is very motivated and intelligent, and knows exactly what she wants to be taught to be prepared for school.

Lauderhill, FL Biology tutoring
This week, we mainly studied for an upcoming Biology quiz on gas exchange. This was a continuation of last week, and the student retained a large part of the subjects we had previously covered. I expect that he will do well on the quiz. We additionally worked on algebra - specifically finding quadratic equations in standard and vertex form from their roots. The student did very well on these problems. While he struggled initially, he picked up the solution strategy fairly quickly. With future units, I will try to make a bigger push for solving problems step by step, and writing out each step.
