For this session, we focused mostly on the student's writing. During the previous session, we had identified his writing to be around a 7.5 or so out of 12, so we are aiming to increase the number to at least a 9.5. We had gone through a writing sample before, so this time we broke down the writing process step by step. I demonstrated how to prepare a brainstorm and outline that would help achieve a 5 or 6 on the ACT. We practiced with the structure of the essay, and began drafting a broad opening to put the prompt into context. I assigned the rest of the essay to him to finish on his own for homework. We also reviewed the English section, and focused on his explanations to the answers. He only missed 11 out of 75, which is on track for our goal. Moreover, his explanations were citing specific grammar rules that he had learned in previous sessions, and of the questions he had missed, he narrowed down the answers to two and was generally able to pick the correct answer when prompted.

I had assigned the student a timed English section after our last session. We spent the first 15 minutes going over his answers. He had some trouble with the "placement" English questions. For instance, "Where would sentence 2 best fit for the paragraph to make the most sense?" We did some practice problems, but he still seemed to struggle with the concept, so I am developing an exercise for next week's session. We then went over some math concepts that he had wanted to review, namely properties of angles, Trig functions, and area formulas. He has a good handle on the Math section, though. Finally, we went over some strategies for the timed reading section. He still struggles with teasing out various characters and main ideas. They tend to get jumbled in his head. We worked on a system of making a list of key players or key ideas in the margins while reading. During our next session, we will work on the "placement" English questions, Reading section strategies, and Science section strategies. I assigned him a timed Math section for homework.
