Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Amelia in Cranston, RI
Today, the student began working through her review packet. She is usually comfortable with studying vocabulary on her own, so we decided to work together on the grammar portion of her review packet. She has a strong grasp on noun-adjective agreement, though she had some difficulty with pronouns (types and forms). By the end of the lesson, she was feeling more confident, though she will probably need more practice with the various types of pronouns. She plans to complete the verb portions of the packet on her own, and we will address the more complex syntax sections at our next lesson.

Latin Tutoring review by Stephen in Cranston, RI
We spent this session mostly reviewing homework that the student had been assigned that week. The main things we covered in this session were the future active infinitive, the use of two different words to denote different phrases (alius...alius), and gerundives.

Latin Tutoring review by James in Cranston, RI
Today we continued to work on sequence of tenses. We went over purpose clauses, result clauses, and indirect questions. The student seemed more confident with the material and was using the methods we were going over yesterday when approaching sentences. He was receptive to listening to the feedback I had for him when translating and was focused throughout. We also began working on some English to Latin translations, which he needs more work on before taking on more complex topics.

Latin Tutoring review by Abigail in Cranston, RI
The student and I began our session by going over participles. Her class had recently covered this topic, and she felt that her understanding was a bit shaky. I showed her some charts that organized the information in an understandable and accessible way. I referred to these charts in my explanations. She and I also worked through several example sentences that used participles. As part of our discussion of participles, I introduced the topic of gerunds and gerundives, which her class will cover in the next couple of weeks. Again, I made sure to show her lots of examples. She seemed to understand gerunds and gerundives very well, which is great--this is a topic that trips up a lot of Latin students. We also spent some time discussing how to study and memorize verb synopses, which will be the topic of one of her upcoming quizzes. We ended our session with some challenging sight reading from Cicero, which she performed very well on.

Latin Tutoring review by Greg in Cranston, RI
The student and I reviewed participles for his upcoming test. We went over how they were formed, and I went over some questions he had. I felt that he was getting a better grasp on the topic once we started going over examples in Latin sentences together. I told him that I will find more examples before our next session, as I felt that seeing them in a sentence and how they worked helped him understand the topic much better.

Latin Tutoring review by Kerry in Cranston, RI
The student was a real trooper tonight. He handled demonstrative pronouns and adjectives well, and Latin pronouns are definitely not easy. I'm very proud how well he did tonight. Great job! Now, go relax!!
