Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Abigail in Akron, OH
The student and I began our session by talking about what he had covered in the previous week. He had taken a quiz on irregular verbs, which he felt he had performed well on, and was preparing for a quiz on the uses of the genitive. He also told me that his class had been increasingly focused on translation. I tried to adjust my lesson plan for the evening accordingly. We started by talking about the forms of the genitive and its usages and syntax. We then moved on to looking at the genitive in context. I started by giving him a set of noun pairs, where one word would be in the genitive, and asked him to translate them. He was able to complete this exercise accurately and easily. We then moved on to studying a couple of sentences from his textbook. This exercise also seemed to come easily to him, so I decided to try to challenge him. We then took a look at some sentences from Caesar's De Bello Gallico and from some Catullus Carmina that employed the genitive. Although this exercise may have been a bit too challenging for his level of Latin, I do believe that it helped him develop important skills for how to approach unfamiliar and challenging Latin passages.

Latin Tutoring review by Kerry in Akron, OH
The student brought her A game to tutoring tonight! We reviewed how to form the subjunctive in the present and imperfect tenses, and we reviewed three of the independent uses of the subjunctive mood in Latin (jussive, hortatory, and optative) and one of the dependent uses of the subjunctive mood in Latin (purpose clauses). She is going to blow away tomorrow's quiz on this material. Fantastic job tonight!

Latin Tutoring review by Amelia in Akron, OH
Today, we focused on reviewing sections 24-29 in the student's textbook in preparation for her midterm. We looked over some vocabulary, and she has flashcards that she should continue to review prior to the test. She seems to know her patterns much better, which should help with her memorization of principal parts. We also practiced translation, which went well. Much of the focus was on reviewing all the grammar concepts; we went through all the patterns for subjunctive uses, as well as other grammatical items, and made lists of important "structural vocabulary." She has all these notes and should look them over to make sure she understands them all. If not, she can text or email me any questions.

Latin Tutoring review by Letizia in Akron, OH
The lesson went very well. I explained perfect passive indicative and pluperfect passive indicative, which are the next things they will do in class. The score on his tests and quizzes has jumped from C-/D to a B, and in his last vocabulary quiz he got 100. He was very happy. I am going to send him practice exercise with the material we covered today.

Latin Tutoring review by Paula in Akron, OH
The student has a test tomorrow, so we worked on preparing for that. The session went well. His primary concern was the verbs that would be on the test, including various tenses. To work on preparing for the tenses, we took verbs from each conjugation and worked through the tenses he would be tested on. I tried to point out the patterns in the tenses as we moved, as I think they are notable and can help with memorization. He required very little correction and grew more confident in his answers as the session progressed.

Latin Tutoring review by Sayaka in Akron, OH
We reviewed all 50 hiragana today at beginning of session. The student pronounced all 50 hiragana perfectly. Plus he is able to recognize most of hiragana and to write about 1/3 of hiragana without looking at a hiragana chart. It was great see his progress. His homework will be to be able to write all hiragana.
