Today we went through practice problems by subject and solved them. We began with algebra which the student did well with. She often needed a slight reminder of how to start or which formula to use, but then was able to take over from there. Next we did arithmetic, which was her strongest subject. She got most of them correct on her own. Next we moved into data analysis. She was a bit intimidated at first by these problems because they are longer and contain more information, but she soon realized they are mostly similar and she gained confidence. Finally, we went into geometry, which was her most challenging subject. She seemed intimidated by diagrams and angles, and often needed guidance through the steps of the problems. She continues to have a positive, receptive attitude toward me and the material.

The student and I began by going over the vocabulary enrichment work she had done since our last session then returned to the Math section. In this session, we focused on strategies for dealing with the types of problems she finds most challenging. Specifically, we practiced carefully assessing word problems to determine what information the question is asking the student to find, translating word problem phrases accurately into mathematical expressions, plugging in concrete numbers (that fit any specified criteria) to make abstract, variable-only problems more accessible, and using the definition of a line's slope to solve problems ranging from finding a missing coordinate of a point on a line, given that line's slope and another point along it, to finding the missing leg of a right triangle when given the slope of the hypotenuse and the length of the other leg. We also reviewed how to solve permutations (aka 'number of possible combinations) problems when there are restrictions on repeating items/colors/etc. or when certain items/colors/etc. are restricted from occupying certain positions. She expressed a lack of confidence in her math skills at times, and indicated that she found it stressful and overwhelming when math questions involved skills that she hasn't used in a few years or longer. I reassured her that her math skills are in fact sound, and that her work in AP Calculus this year, and indeed the fact that she's in AP Calc to begin with, are testaments to her ability. We also talked about the importance of investing a few seconds here and there to manage stress, given the effects that the "stress hormones" adrenaline and cortisol have on a person's ability to think clearly and analyze carefully, and began to explore some stress-management techniques that she can use before and during the assessment. She continues to pick up concepts that we review quickly, and I have every confidence that with further practice and a greater degree of trust in her abilities, she will do very well indeed.

This was a productive first meeting, and through it, I've gained a better understanding of the student's math level. During our session, she and I focused on reviewing and strengthening her understanding of linear equations. Because algebra is such an essential component of the math section, I decided it would be important to solidify her knowledge of the "y=mx+b" equation. We were able to make significant progress calculating slope as well as x- and y-intercepts. I feel confident that she will be able to answer easier algebraic problems on her own. However, we will need to spend more time on the intermediate- and advanced-level problems. She had a bit of trouble balancing equations and is unclear about operations involving fractions and exponents, so we will spend more time honing in on those areas as well. I left her with 1 section of SAT math to complete on her own. I told her not to time herself and to do her best to complete each problem. We will go over her questions and mistakes when I see her next.

We covered algebra, specifically, the Product, Power, and Difference Rules for exponents, translating words and phrases into algebraic equations, the definition of absolute value and how equations containing them often have more than one solution, direct and inverse proportionality, and solving algebraic equations. I asked the student to review the material we had covered, finish the solving equations section, and to do the 25 minute practice quiz at the end of the packet for next time.

Went through different online math practice tests to give her exposure to a variety of different math problems that could be on the admissions test. Student is learning very well, but struggles a little bit with deciphering what some problems are asking her to find. Asked her to practice about 15 minutes a day with her prep book and to memorize certain formulas that might be on the test. She is beginning to do most of the problems without my help. Hope to start to time her at the next session.
