For the student's last session we returned to focus on her French class. She initially expressed that she isn't struggling with anything in her class, nor does she have any upcoming assignments or tests so we started to explore a grammatical structure that she has encountered already but hasn't officially learned in class: the subjunctive. In the course of talking through the process of establishing a verbs stem it came to light that she hadn't heard an explanation for the process of finding verb stems for a few other tenses, particularly the imperfect. In light of this, we took a step back from the subjunctive to review the principles behind the list of imperfect verb stems that she had been given to memorize. She expressed that the formation of the imperfect makes a great deal more sense to her now.

She also had a French poem that she had to memorize for class, so we practiced reciting it orally and written, and once she had it fully memorized we then translated the poem line by line for practice translating. She has a good handle on grammar and the reviewing helps.

During this session we reviewed and expanded upon the various expressions used to express duration of time, such as pendant, depuis, pour, en, dans...etc., as well as referencing the day or week before/after an event, depending on whether the event is in the present (aujourd'hui), or is in the past/future (ce jour-la). The student brought up a lot of pertinent points about the ambiguity of some of the expressions when translated to English, and we tried going through clues one could use, mostly relating to the verb tense.

On this day, the student learned the verb "etre," along with vocabulary for family members and adjectives used for describing people. To apply the vocabulary, she constructed phrases to describe herself. For additional practice, I had her choose four family members and compose 4 sentences to describe each one.
