Worked on the student's "Tribute Speech" that she has to give this week. Went over it a few times and gave her some advice on how to make it better. Also went over a draft of a paper she had written some time ago. I corrected various grammar errors and left her with some comments for improving it.

The student and I reviewed several grammar rules and examples which form the basis of many questions on standardized exams. He stated that he has scored well on his SAT and ACT work and continued to study his vocabulary. I reviewed his personal statement essay with him, stressing the need to strengthen his topic sentences and vary his word choice. I also reviewed his response to the SAT Prompt 1, and noted that he could make similar improvements. He is going to edit both essays and draft a third. He will also continue his regiment of sentence correction and reading comprehension questions.

During this session, we spend a bit more time on building blocks of grammar to help the student's writing. We went through conjunctions, outlining, coordinating clauses, etc. The student mentioned that they haven't spent a lot of time on these topics in school. I gave her a resource that has all of the mechanics of writing in one place. We spent time working on the persuasive essay. She practiced writing a persuasive essay during our session. We worked on using transition phrases. We also worked on developing a strong thesis statement. The student and I went through the process of "peer conferencing" which is a technique and checklist to edit writing work. She did have any new grades to present. It was my last session with the student, and I left her with a drive folder filled with useful resources and practice.

This time we discussed major themes from her class book. I also gave her some pointers on how to find ways to relate to this story on a more personal level, and she was able to give me some feedback about things that she could relate this book to. I encouraged her to read further and to go back and notate the pages she found that backed up her discussions.

The student shared with me one of her substantial grades that she received back on a major assignment. With this grade, we were able to pin point where she is struggling. She has a midterm coming up, and she believes the midterm will be given in the same style as an AP test. As such, we have developed a plan for future sessions. We will spend the first 30 minutes doing timed reading, annotations, and analysis and the additional time working on assignments she may have.

Using a primary historical document, an excerpt from Benjamin Franklin's "Autobiography," we constructed an outline explaining and extrapolating on the analogy of the speckled axe. The wordy style and pedantic vocabulary of early 19th century English was tedious. We read through the passage together and talked out comprehension of key passages. Also discussed the Puritan influence over the two centuries leading up to Franklin's autobiography. She will write the essay tomorrow, which is due Friday.
