Today the student redid some parts of a US science assignment on the element Germanium and what it bonds with. We reviewed Lesson 7.1 pronouns for his test tomorrow. He was struggling with some of the vocabulary in the grammar lesson but as we reviewed, it got easier. Overall, his attitude was positive and we stayed focused on the task at hand. I employed the notecard strategy by drawing pictures to go along with the definitions of the vocabulary from the grammar lesson. I left him with some more review of the vocabulary in the grammar lesson.

Today we did quite a bit of comparison of the text of Romeo and Juliet with the Baz Luhrman film adaptation. We explored how Luhrman leaves out scenes and speeches, and the effect this has upon our understanding of the play. Especially we discussed the reactions of Benvolio and the Prince to the deaths of Tybalt and Mercutio. We also discussed the nature of the friendship between Mercutio and Romeo and how it is based on wordplay and wit. We compared the more balanced battle of wits Romeo enjoys with Mercutio after he has met Juliet with the conversations between the two about Rosaline. We also looked at the Luhrman interpretation of the Queen Mab speech, and came to a judgement that it does not communicate Mercutio's character as well as a more 'straight' performance might. We also worked on the class assignment, to analyze Act III scene 2 for its mood and characterization of Juliet. As very little of this scene is preserved in the Lurhman version, we looked at a short clip of West Side story, which also presents interpretations of scenes from Romeo and Juliet. Using these and a close analysis of the text we identified quotations that contributed to the mood of the scene and highlighted aspects of Juliet's childishness, optimism and impatience.

The student and I worked on interpreting a poem together. She needs to present the poem tomorrow for class. So we practiced reading the poem. Then, we started to analyze the poem and try to figure out what it means. We figured out the rhyme scheme, determined the tone and imagery of the poem, and came up with a couple of open ended questions about the poem that she would be able to present to her class. We then compared the poem to one of her previous poems. We were able to make a good compare and contrast analysis of the two poems. Finally, while we were looking for a picture for the poem, we had a little epiphany of how the title and the poem relate, which really got the student excited about the poem. In the end, she admitted that she really enjoyed the poem.

Today, the student and I began working on his final essay, about who is the protagonist of The Glass Menagerie. After discussion of the complexity of the play and the many different arguments to be made, we landed on Amanda as protagonist and Tom as antagonist, and created a nuanced thesis. We outlined the structure and will meet twice more this week to finish his work on it.

Today the student and I covered the basic rules of grammar in the English language. We reviewed parallelism, misplaced modifiers, adverbs, commas, pronouns, and verb-tense agreement. I made the student a sheet of the 15 most common errors in English grammar, and I let him keep it. After reviewing each concept, I asked him to come up with his own sentence that included an error and one sentence that included the correction.
