Recent Tutoring Session Reviews

★★★★★

"Today I tutored the student for about an hour while she finished a practice exam to prepare for the test.
I then proctored the exam for her for the next 2 hours. We plan on trying some new techniques in order to get her to understand radicals and how to work with them."

★★★★★

"In preparation for Monday's Chapter 9 test, the student and I did a comprehensive review of the chapter topics and completed 2 assignments (worksheet and textbook review problems). Topics included identifying shapes of quadratic graphs, finding the vertex, graphing a quadratic on a coordinate system, finding the axis of symmetry, knowing how a coefficient might invert a graph, completing the square to solve quadratics, factoring to solve quadratics, applying the quadratic equation to solve equations, knowing how using the discriminant determine the number of solutions to a quadratic, and factoring. "Assessment of tutoring needs/focus. End of semester exams - English and math. English: grammar, punctuation (comma and semicolon placement, writing, conjunctions) - asked the student to bring his materials from school since the focus was on test prep. Math - Algebra I level math - quadratic equations."

★★★★★

"The student's final test of the course focuses entirely on factoring, so today we did our final review of factoring, preparing her reference sheet for the test along the way. The student didn't have any trouble with prime factorization or factoring monomials, and for the most part she remembered how to divide out greatest common factors and factor trinomials, but special binomial factoring once again took some extra time. With today's practice and her reference sheet, though, I think she is prepared for the test."

★★★★★

"Today was the first session, so we spent a lot of time discussing where the student is and what she needs to plan on doing and how to approach studying. We started going over some of the areas where she struggled, such as quadratics and graphing."

★★★★★

"We went over section 9.8. We looked at factoring by grouping, and came close to completing her homework assignment. She seems to have a pretty good grasp on factoring this way. We will meet later this week to review before the test. "

"We reviewed how to find the equation of a line when given the slope and one point before learning new graphing vocabulary. Topics covered: definition of a function; domain and range; how to determine dependent/independent variables in a word problem. We did several addition and subtraction problems that included negative numbers, and she was able to visualize the concept with use of a number line. We spent significant time manipulating one-variable equations and discussed order of operations. We ran out of time in our session before I felt that she mastered this concept, so we will pick up at this point the next time that we meet. I asked her to find the chapter in her textbook where simple one-variable equations are first mentioned, so that we will have some additional problems to work on during our next session. She is making progress in each of our sessions, but we still have a lot of material to cover together. "

"The student and I really focused a lot on square roots and cube roots. He struggles with this subject, though he excels greatly in most other areas of math. We will continue to nail this down until he is as confident with this as he is with the other areas of algebra"

★★★★★

"Looked at grades and reviewed math quiz on polynomials, binomials, monomials, etc. and two-equations systems, solving with substitution or elimination. Also looked at grades. Must get Spanish, Math and History up. Completed math homework on multiplying polynomials. "

★★★★★

"During the last session, I worked with the student. During the session, we completed section 7.1 of her algebra course work which involved exponentials. The student was able to complete most of the questions easily. We will be practicing some more questions to make sure that she completely understands how to implement the concepts. We also completed some of her biology coursework specifically half of the end of chapter questions for biology.

"The student and I spent our time working through his algebra homework which honestly wasn't to difficult for him. We worked through the ideas of setting up equations to find certain values. i.e. the width of a rectangle is (x+1) the length is (x+2), what's a formula for the area, etc. He's completely equipped to handle all of it."

★★★★★

"Reviewed topics for algebra test - parabolas, manipulating parabolas in various ways, domain and range of functions. Also reviewed French vocab for test on clothing unit which the student really seems to have a handle on."
