Lansing, IL ISEE tutoring

After our last session, I was happy with the student's work on the Reading section (sentence completion and synonyms), though there are still improvements to be made. During that session, we also worked on Math. Today, we continued working on the Math section. We reviewed the concepts several times. For homework, I assigned her the remainder of the assessment Math practice exam. I am also going to give her practice problems related to the concepts that we practiced today from an online source's database. Lastly, I am going to recommend videos that she can watch to review the math concepts when she gets confused.

Student V: We spent the first part of tonight going over some reading exercises. She chose the book, but I asked her several questions about the text at the end of the chapter. This included plot-based questions like "who is this, what did they do and why" and also more in depth questions like "how do we know that, where does it say that, what word lets us know that." Overall she performed pretty well. We then talked about cookies to work with fractions. e.g. "If I only want half as many cookies, how many do I want." She very cleverly saw through my attempt to make fractions fun, but did a good job nonetheless! Student C and I started with fractions. She had just done some, so I had her report back what she had learned. She very accurately named percentages and fractions and then was able to apply them to different regions of shapes. We also worked with bar graphs and fractions which she grasped onto well. We finished with some reading where I focused on questions that were less superficial than what I covered with Student V. She did very well.
