Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the law of sines, law of cosines, and Heron's formula for finding the area of a triangle. The student seems motivated to learn the material and picks up on things quickly. He said he would study the three topics we covered. I recommended that the student keeps a review sheet that he adds all new topics to for easy access to all of his formulas. This will help when he needs to study for a test or remember old material. We set Monday's at 8:30pm as our designated tutoring sessions."
"Today I met with the student to work on Algebra II. His class has finished the chapter on factoring methods and has moved on to rational expressions. This material is actually much simpler, and the heavy use of arithmetic to solve problems plays to the student's strengths (he has a good intuition for how to factor numbers). Today our big focus was on what he is allowed to do when combining rational expressions and what the easiest method for doing so is. Overall it went really well, and I was also able to show him an alternative method that made simplifying variables more intuitive. I'm confident that the student is going to do well with the material we covered."
"We covered the first of three chapters that would be on the student's comprehensive math test, which included the three forms of solving quadratic equations for x: factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula. Once she had the quadratic formula somewhat memorized she was very comfortable using it. Completing the square was the least familiar for the student, but once we went through a few examples, she was equally comfortable with it."
"Today the student and I went through some additional related rates problems. During this session, we focused on some more challenging problems involving systems that could be solved with the help of right triangle properties. He was a bit rusty at the beginning of our session, but as the session progressed he was able to work more independently. In order to keep his skills sharp, he may want to find some related rates problems online that he can work through during the next couple of weeks. See you next Sunday!"
"We went over her last test covering finding volume using integration, disk and washer and shell methods. We also did partial integration. The student should continue to work on trig problems. Also, she is continuing to memorize her natural log properties and exponent properties."
"Today we went over integration by parts. He had missed class so he needed to learn the topic from scratch, but he picked it up very quickly and seemed to have a very good understanding by the end of the session."
