"I covered the following concepts during the session: Math: finding mean and median and adding and subtracting decimals. Reading: reading comprehension. I provided help and support as the student worked online for Math . He struggled a bit with finding the missing number in a given set when given the mean. After showing him the process, he was able to figure it out on his own. It was also the same with adding and subtracting decimals. He struggled with lining the decimals up correctly. I explained he needed to make sure the digits are lined up correctly according the place value. For reading, we worked on his Religion homework. He had to read an article and take notes. I would have him summarize after each paragraph."
"I had a really good session today with this student! Since I know school is coming up, we focused on order of operations, number puzzles, ordering numbers from least to greatest, and overall number sense, as those should be some of the first topics to come up, and I wanted to get him thinking about those things. He had no issues with ordering or overall number sense, and for order of operations, he understood it after a few tries. On Thursday, we'll continue with these topics."
"I had the student read his high frequency word cards, review the 3 sounds of the letter y, and sort words with the 2 sounds of ow. I had him reread the fluency passage "Fog" and his words correct per minute met his goal. I will have him move up to a more complex passage. We reviewed 2-digit subtraction without regrouping using a worksheet and base-10 blocks. I retaught 2-digit subtraction with regrouping and no zeros with a worksheet, a place value mat, and base-10 blocks. He is at the developing stage, but really started to grasp the concept."
"I had the student take out the 3's and 6's skip counting sheets that he created last week. I asked him to continue to color the numbers as he said then out loud. Then I had him skip count while touching the numbers. I pointed out that every other number on the 3's was on the 6's and we found other numbers that had that same pattern. I had him draw out the multiples of 4 to practice next. I asked him to post the three sheets where he sees them often during the week."
"I had the student working on a practice test. He finished about 30 questions, and then we worked on a hundreds chart, looking at the relationship between numbers. He found the patterns almost immediately. He was very focused and attentive."
"I have assigned the student some homework to complete. It is very important for him to complete his homework and actually put in some effort in order for the material to remain fresh. The reading comprehension passages are especially important because mastering that skill takes a great deal of practice and consistency."
