Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered 2 'checkpoints' and one exam of his online programming for English, this time discussing the beginnings of Romantic Era writings, as well as concluding a section on Puritanical Era writing and slave-writing in pre-revolutionary America. The student had noticeable improvements on scores in the checkpoints and tests compared to before tutoring, averaging in the 80s now. I left him with suggestions for how to start writing a 2-page essay on Romantic writing, and we outlined the basic thesis, main points, and argument which he should do before the next time we meet. When the student reads sections thoroughly, and is focused he does excellently."
"The student and I began our session with a discussion of The Odyssey, which she is reading in her English class. We discussed the role of the sirens and how the term "siren song" has entered the popular lexicon. In anticipation of her test on similes, we reviewed what makes something a simile (vs a metaphor) and then looked for examples in her text. She is confident that she will do well on the quiz. We also reviewed her SAT vocab words for her quiz next week. She was feeling confident about the words. I gave her a new study technique (using both definitions and putting the word in a sentence) to assist her in preparing for the test next week. Lastly, we reviewed her human geography course. We discussed population pyramids and contributing factors, specifically migration with push and pull factors. We also talked about the project that she has due on Monday and its requirements. She is looking forward to completing the assignment."
"We went over the homework from last week and discussed areas that need improvement. We also did read aloud comprehension with his Oz book and went over other homework for the coming week."
"Today we focused on learning words that have multi-syllables. We focused on the letters C, Y, G, and F and their sounds. We will continue this work in the next tutoring session. Then we will read a nonfiction text practicing how to break up long words with multiple syllables."
"Today we focused on the student's writing. She wrote a few sentences of a story about fairies, then transitioned to reading. She is definitely improving, and was able to spell certain words by the end of the session that she had struggled with at the beginning."
"Today we focused on vocabulary, and it showed me that the student understands words through the help of visuals. She did not struggle as much as expected. She was really energetic in today's session and was able to complete reading and finding words to complete a sentence on her own. Next week we will be focusing on vowels and will continue to focus on differentiating sound of words among visuals in order to help her connect these two."
