Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on the student's next homework assignment. We talked about what an analysis is and in what circumstances it is appropriate. First we covered how to run descriptive statistics to get familiar with the data set. Then we interpreted the output. She is quickly becoming more comfortable with statistics in general. We had virtually no technical difficulties today!"
"The student worked through her geometry homework. Despite the challenging nature of some of the problems she was able to reason critically and arrive at the answers. I believe her confidence with a number of the concepts has grown since last week and I hope she continues to make such excellent progress. Next session scheduled for the upcoming Saturday."
"The student and I worked on volume problems. We talked about the geometric intuition behind the integral and how that can be adapted to certain volumes. We looked at volumes of solids whose base is given by a region in the plane and whose height is related to the value of a function. We did this for problems involving exponential functions and sine. The heights of the solids were determined by squares, semi-circles, and equilateral triangles. He did well with this topic, but we did have to do some deriving when we were faced with integrating."
"The student did quite a bit better with the flash card game today. I also brought some new ELA practice for her today. She did a very good job with reading the passages, which were nonfiction. Sometimes she needed a bit of direction with the multiple-choice questions, but always got the right answer in the end. I think it's a case of the wording of the answer rather than not understanding. We will continue to work on these."
"During this session the student completed her homework packet for the week, which included both reading and math. This was incredibly easy for her, and it was finished in about 10 minutes. We moved on to more math practice based on what they've been working on in class. We started with subtracting money, which went pretty well. She did need a reminder about how to borrow from numbers like $10.00, but got it after completing a few together. We also worked on multiplication, which she is improving on, though she still needs to count for the 6 and 7 tables. We ended with a few division problems; this was harder for her, mainly because it is a new concept, but she understands how to get a solution by using multiplication. We will continue to work on division."
"Today, the student worked on word problems from one of his workbooks to practice his addition and subtraction skills as well as interpreting word problems correctly and determining when to add and when to subtract. He did very well."
