Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We had a very productive session. We worked on solving simple algebraic equations. She struggles with understanding order of operations, so we reviewed PEMDAS. We also reviewed the structure and function of cell organelles. We are working on her being able to complete the homework and study for tests by herself."
"During this session, we worked on her Algebra homework. She still struggles identifying real number basic properties (of addition and multiplication). Therefore, we spent some time writing flashcards with each property and an example. She has a math test next Thursday, so I want to make sure that she masters this skill by the end of this week. We also worked on PSAT material. We went over a few definitions (context, connotation/denotation, and implication of words and passages). She is very detailed oriented, which makes it easier for her to understand a storyline, but she needs to grow her vocabulary to make more accurate inferences."
"In today's session we went over photosynthesis and the Calvin cycle. I had the student watch a few videos to refresh her on the material as well as provide a visual of the information. Then, we did the talk back method where I had her explain her notes to me. Next, she took some quizzes on the information so she could practice applying her knowledge. After that, I had her explain to me the concepts, this time not looking at her notes to see how much she was able to retain, and she was able to relay a lot of the information. I also had her make a quiz in the app, so she can go back and access her notes online and practice for her test this week. As long as she makes sure to study for her exam on Friday, she should do well!"
"The student and I went over some science, math and reading homework. We were able to finish it all; however, he was frustrated with reading at the end. There were some vocabulary for science we had to review, but he seemed okay going over those. We also had to review subtraction dealing with smaller digits in the ones place, but again, he seemed to understand and only needed a couple of explanations to understand and remember."
"We covered basic functions, linear equations, and finding the slope of a line given two points. The student was able to grasp concepts quickly. He said math was his last class and he often stays back a little longer after class ends to try and understand concepts covered that he didn't understand. He has a test on Tuesday, so we scheduled a session tomorrow to help him prepare for the session. His math skills have improved drastically, and he is able to understand things more clearly. He is not very interested in math, but wants to do well in his class."
"We used this time to come up with a plan for completing the student's summer assignments. She has quite a bit of work, and I think it's very smart of her to begin on it now! Her teachers gave her a packet of assignments, and the first thing we did was to break down those assignments into smaller tasks to form a to-do list/checklist of specific assignments. We also created a calendar and set goals for completing a few of her assignments. She and I did some research for her project and found a book to use for one of her potential topics (the evolution of the Internet and social media, and how it has affected the way we live). We looked up more information on some of the books on her summer reading list, and once she decided which ones she wanted to read, we ordered those two books, along with her required summer reading books and the books she will read for her project."
