Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

Lancaster, CA MCAT tutoring
The student and I began our session by discussing the logic behind the correct answer choices on a difficult passage. She was quick to find the error in her logic after brief explanation and together we developed some strategies for how to cognitively organize the salient aspects of an author's argument. These will help her categorize all of the details of a passage into each of the opposing camps of a debate. We then worked through a difficult passage on enzyme kinetics which she had some trouble with. From this discussion she learned many useful terms and definitions in the subject. After this we worked through several discrete and passage based questions on atomic structure and stoichiometry. We will meet in one week's time to continue working through general chemistry and physics content.

We reviewed the fundamental strategies for approaching short verbal questions and standard reading comp questions on the GRE. The student has a really strong basis with regards to verbal, as evidenced by her vocabulary, ability to consistently pull out relevant information in short verbal questions, and ability to pull out relevant big picture and structural information from reading comp passages. I believe with some regular practice on reading comp and consistent vocab studying, she could achieve an excellent score on verbal. Next time, we'll review reading comp reasoning questions and dive back into math review.

We started with some reading comprehension, and I think that studying vocabulary is helping the student. Most of our time was spent on math. We went over normal distribution, median/mean, and combinations. We talked over her plans before taking the test next week and arranged to meet on Friday afternoon.

We went over how to break down arguments into conclusions, premises, and assumptions, and how this will be used both for the Verbal section of the GRE and also the Argumentative Essay. We spent the full 2 hours on this, but it is a crucial skill to learn. I thought it was best developed together. She seemed to greatly appreciate this as a strategy for argument questions and said that it was the best session she had on breaking down arguments systematically.

We went over sentence completion and sentence equivalence questions. The student showed a large increase in the amount of test-relevant vocabulary that he knew over our last meeting. This lead to a large improvement in the amount of questions that he got correct. He seems to struggle with the sentence equivalent problems more than the sentence completion ones (except when the latter have 3 blanks). He proceeds methodologically, and is good at eliminating answer choices. The student is a little too quick to pick two words because they mean the same thing for the sentence equivalence questions, and he should first check that they also produce the most logically consistent and coherent sentence. He should also consider more thoroughly whether two words with distinct meanings nonetheless produce a sentence that means the same thing. We'll work on his trouble areas more going forward.
