Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Tonight, we focused on short e words. We reviewed the letters and their sounds. We read a story with short e words. I also talked to the student about "bumpy and smooth" reading. It's a good trick to use to focus on fluency. Tomorrow we will focus on short o."
"We covered percentiles, standard deviation, variance, and a lot of material about probability. The student seems to be a pretty quick learner; once I explain something, she seems to grasp it pretty well. Her attitude is good; she wants to learn this material. We discussed coming up with some general rules for probability, which seems like it is going to be a large part of her exam. We will go over that in a session right before her exam. She is clearly making progress."
"We practiced for the student's upcoming oral part of her final that she takes on Friday. We conversed in Spanish almost the whole time. She seemed to have fun working on this, and since I initially felt that she was a bit overwhelmed by it, we made it fun, and she became very engaged in the conversation. I gave her some tips for doing an oral exam with her teacher. She is to practice it more over the next day or so, and then her exam is Friday. She says she did very well on her last quiz, so we shall see if her grade went up some more. She is such a hardworking student, and I enjoy working with her!"
"He and I worked on the SAT 2R together. He did the no-calc section and the first 12 problems of the calc section with no assistance whatsoever, and overall, he did quite well. The no-calc questions presented more of a challenge, and we spent some time reviewing factoring and foiling patterns so that he can have them fully memorized. He will finish the 2R, and we will go over it on Monday."
"We completed the drill at the end of Chapter 4 Text Completions, and went through the material on Chapter 5 Sentence Equivalence and Chapter 6 Reading Comprehension. We finished the drill at the end of Chapter 5, and the student will complete the drills at the end of Chapter 6 for our next session, in addition to completing Chapter 7 and its drill."
"We discussed strategies for the exam. For English, the student needs to read to see how it sounds. For reading, she should raise the speed a bit. She should go with an overall impression to locate the correct answer without having to go back to locate it and waste time."
