Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

Lakewood, WA SAT tutoring
Since we began reviewing some of the more difficult math problems last week, the student asked if we could look at some of the most difficult problems this week before moving on to the writing section. We analyzed several problems of difficulty level 5, discussed what made them difficult, and went over the best ways to approach each one with a view toward establishing general strategies for handling the hardest problems. He did very well and there was only one problem that he could not determine how to approach at all. Once we broke down the logic of the problem and walked through the steps to solve it, he indicated that it made sense to him and that he felt confident that he would be able to tackle any similar problems on his actual test. We then moved on to the multiple choice writing sections. In particular, we discussed the most commonly tested grammar, punctuation, and usage errors and worked through an entire sample writing section in order to see how these errors appear in each of the three question types. He has a solid grasp of grammar but benefited from seeing what tricks the questions sometimes used to make errors or the lack thereof harder to spot.

The student and I started by going over two math problems from the last practice set he completed, both fill in the answer problems. I think he is able to understand how to approach similar problems in the future. Next, we read over two essays that received a score of six to examine how to logically organize ideas. He then practiced writing out a meaty outline for an essay prompt and did very well. He successfully stated an opinion, supported that opinion with cogent, thorough examples, and would have been on track to write a high scoring essay. We then decided to focus on reading as we both felt more confident with his performance on the writing portion of the test. The first passage we read was very difficult and he struggled a bit, but it helped us hit a lot of strategy points. He was able to get all the questions right on the next paired passage we came to. I think he's on track to perform to the best of his ability come Saturday.
