The student took a practice reading comprehension test and covered two passages. I worked through one with him and he worked on one by himself. He forgets to eliminate answers sometimes, and gets test anxiety. It is important for him to stay 'active' during the test. He scored very well. I could see his confidence skyrocket, especially on his last passage. I instructed him to continue to eliminate answers and always refer back to the passage on the questions regarding specific passages. He made combined for an 83% test average on our tests. He scored over a 90% on his second passage and worked extremely hard through the final passage. I felt like he had a firm grasp and I am confident for him to continually improve his scores.

The student and I were really productive yesterday morning. She picked an essay topic and wrote first drafts of her introductory paragraph (including the thesis), and topic sentences for each of her three body paragraphs. Out of the six points she'd like to make, she found a quotation for one and knows what she needs to look for in the text to support the other five. She planned to spend another hour or two after I left to find the other quotations that she'd like to analyze. Ideally she'll already have a draft by the time I arrive Tuesday night, and we can work on editing what she's written and making the essay as strong as possible.

Today the boys and I ran more SAT practice regarding reading and grammar. I noticed that when the boys are reading the passages, they are concentrating more on dictating the words rather than processing the content. I read the passage to them instead, stopping every 10 lines to discuss the new information presented. They were able to identify important aspects directly within the story, but their skills of implication beyond the story are lagging. However, I have noticed they are much more comfortable in reaching appropriate conclusions of answers for the questions attached to the passage. Their critical reading skills have certainly improved. We worked on a grammar passage as well and we need to review specific aspects of punctuation. We have previously discussed commas and semicolons, but they need to refresh how to use them. We have agreed to do a writing assignment for our next session.

It was great meeting the student today! I was glad to find him so responsive, so willing to open up and share his thoughts. He was not shy at all about reading to me or writing sentences for me. I was pleased with his reading skills; he goes a little quickly and does not slow down to sound out words, but he read "Back to School? Cool!" very well. We discussed the book afterwards. We spent some time getting to know one another. The student told me a few of his interests, as well as some of the books he's been enjoying reading lately. I'm glad he's been able to find some engaging reading material! I had him write five sentences about himself. Then we went through his work and corrected the few mistakes (placing periods at the ends of sentences, initial caps, etc.). We discussed how, sometimes, our sentences sound one way in our head but don't quite make it to the paper that way! I'll be bringing some worksheets for us on Thursday. Looking forward to working with him again!

We used the plan that the student had constructed in the previous lesson to put her PowerPoint presentation together. We also used Voicethread to add voice narration to the presentation. It was a new experience for her, but she did well.

I gave the student the assignment to write a newspaper article. First we read two short articles together and he answered some questions about them. Then the student chose a title from a list and wrote his own article. He had some trouble choosing at the beginning, but succeeded in writing a funny 1-page article.
