Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Lakewood, WA Elementary Math tutoring
In my final session with the student, we covered solids of rotation and integrating their volume. It seemed like the basic concepts had not been adequately covered in lecture, so most of our session was spent focusing on the concepts. Specifically, how do we come about the formulas that he was given and how to visualize a solid to set up appropriate integrals. Once we had gone over the basic idea of integrating along one dimension to get a volume, we looked at the three most common methods used for solids of rotation. We then worked some practice problems with the time we had left. We jumped to the more challenging problems in order to push his understanding as quickly as possible. Overall, I feel like he grasped the concept and the process and should be able to handle this topic if he practices a bit. With that in mind, I recommended he get a couple hours of practice in before his final tomorrow.

This session was primarily devoted to Algebra II review because of a test the student has tomorrow. I think that he has a good handle on the discontinuous graphs and how to describe the data and the trends on those graphs so he should be in good shape. This test also includes some exponent and power reduction things and as long as he sticks to the processes that he knows he will do well.

We worked on logarithmic and exponential problems today. Some information in this chapter has not been taught thoroughly, so we spent some time in the beginning of the session talking about how and why these problems work. Since we were dealing with several different types of problems, we went through each type until the student was comfortable. Then, in an effort to increase retention, we created a "cheat sheet" for her studying. She took a sample from each type of problem and wrote out all of the steps. In addition, she wrote words down next to each step explaining what she did. She also put equations/properties on this page. This can be used a reference any time she isn't sure.

We did some more geometry work in the student's school packet and briefly discussed what would be considered an irregular polygon, a regular polygon, and what would not be considered a polygon at all. We also took the time to practice more of her multiplication. I hope by next week, we'll be weaning her off of the picture flashcards and working with strictly numbers.

We covered a little bit of grammar, but mostly worked on adding fractions and converting them to decimals. No real struggles for the student. A few fractions slipped him up, but that was it, and he fixed them immediately. He was positive as always. He did a little bit of independent work, but mostly we worked together, and did some extra stuff to boost his confidence. He picked up some of the hard stuff really well, so that was very encouraging.
