Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Lakewood, CO Essay Editing tutoring
Working in the K12 literature class this morning, the student completed Unit 1 Lessons 1, 2 and 3. Lesson 1 presented "theme" -- the overarching (main) idea or lesson in a story which can be stated in a sentence. He was asked whether he agrees or disagrees that the main character of "The Stone" was foolish and selfish in his wish to stay young forever. He disagreed with the standard wisdom that wishing leads to unimagined consequences. He found two pieces of text-based evidence to support his opinion. We considered the scientific standpoint that to know all consequences requires managing the whole universe! Further, the student felt that the members of society that "have" might make up such stories to subdue the "have-nots." It was clear that he enjoyed reading and discussing the fable, and filling in answers in his workbook. Lessons 2 and 3 were based on the story "The Three Brass Pennies," a Chinese legend retold. This story is also about wishes, and a young Chinese student who tries to be wise in his choices. The student compared and contrasted the theme and character with the story from Lesson 1, made predictions, and found China on a world map. In this story the hero saves a bee that is really a magician. He is granted three wishes and decides to think it over first. He asks for the power to read other people's thoughts, to know his own future and to learn everything without effort. The lesson notes directed Lucas to notice foreshadowing -- hints of the outcome. He noted that learning "without effort" is not a worthy wish and therefore foreshadowed the young man's problems. He answered questions online, scoring 100% with excellent recall of details. He learned the words "wrestle," "duplicity," "cordial," and "zest." The student is willing to read aloud although he doesn't enjoy it. He prefers when I read to him which is also valuable for modeling fluency. He reads with satisfactory accuracy and rate, however he needs improvement in prosody or expressiveness (change in voice when reading aloud). Future sessions will include more guided read-aloud of very engaging texts to improve expressiveness and pronunciation.

Today, I tutored the student in developing a written and/or oral summary. I used the QAR guidelines and activity to guide him through the logical steps of writing a summary. This skill includes subjects we have covered in the past such as how to determine the important information, predicting text, and explicit information. He is doing very well with his reading comprehension now. I have asked him to tell me what areas of reading comprehension he feels he still needs help with. I will plan the next 3 sessions on his feedback.
