Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has made significant progress over the last two weeks in terms of being able to recite verb conjugations in all of the tenses she has learned for the verbs ser, ir, tener, and estar, as of today's lesson. We worked on these verbs with memorization exercises on Wednesday and retention has been great, as I tested the student on those today as well. We continued to work on translation activities from English to Spanish, and the student is getting better at using the stated verbs in sentences (real application). Also, we continued to work on applying grammatical rules for accenting words using "la tilde" (accent mark)."
"The student and I reviewed her Midterm Exam Review (Chapters 1-2). In addition, we reviewed a PowerPoint over "El preterito and el imperfecto." We ended the session with some Spanish conversation practice."
"As expected, the student has many gaps in his Spanish learning. We made a list together of what he does and does not remember much of in relation to grammar. We made a list of 7 grammar tenses that he would like to work on. Out of those, we worked on the conditional tense. He was unable to tell me at first what it described, how it was formed, and what the irregulars were. However, at the end of the session (held in Spanish), he was able to communicate entirely in the target language answering questions with 100% accuracy. Awesome! I showed him a way to remember the irregulars by categorizing them into two categories ("d" and "ce/ec"). He copied the notes into a word document for later use. I have many conditional exercises that we will begin with next session as he mentioned that he is learning from just a book at school."
"Today was my first in-person session with the students. We spoke casual conversational German and learned new vocabulary words that had to do with the weather (in this case, autumn words). It was a great session, and I plan to do another in-person meeting with them both soon."
"We reviewed the student's homework, and I had to explain to him why German nouns have different gender, and how to learn new nouns using a dictionary, writing them down and focusing not only on the meaning, but also on the gender and plural form."
"We warmed up with material related to hedgehogs, and then we went over some of the homework. We then spent the rest of the hour learning vocabulary for the different forms of transportation. A little grammar was used, too. For homework, she should write the vocabulary with the articles, one color for each gender. We will work on this more next week."
