Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we discussed the essay the student revised from last session. I read through it once and gave him some constructive feedback. I gave him the essay and told him to edit it. I gave him a list of proofreading suggestions and explained the importance of being able to critique his work. Afterwards we went through his paper and discussed the edits he made. Next he did an exercise that required him to identify run-ons and fragments. We discussed more examples and I allowed him to take notes on the information I gave him. Next we discussed the difference between the use of a comma and semicolon. After reviewing examples together the student had a good understanding of how to properly use these forms of punctuation. We also reviewed the definition of pronouns. I reminded him when and how to use pronouns in his writing. I asked the student to explain to me the importance of understanding the English and grammar topics we discussed in previous sessions and he gave me a detailed answer. We also discussed the different types of sentences and different ways he could incorporate more compound and complex sentences in his writing. Lastly we discussed the 5 steps of the writing process. I let him take notes on the material but instructed him to write it in his own words."

"This session with the student was all about perfecting her justice system PowerPoint presentation and preparing for her oral presentation of the PowerPoint. We worked further on text, pictures, and sounds on the PowerPoint slides, and discussed which parts of the presentation should actually appear on the slide and which should be spoken during the presentation. She has a total of 10 slides in her presentation, and they consist of material from both her original research paper from a few months ago, as well as her more recent advocacy work."
