Lake Station, IN Test Prep tutoring
The student did a fantastic job on the last math practice she took; unfortunately, there was a typo in the (online) booklet she took and it caused her to lose about 5 minutes, and quite a bit of confidence, in finishing the exam on time. When we went back through and discovered the typo, she was able to quickly finish the problems she hadn't had time for, increasing her score significantly. She still has trouble identifying the skill set she's being probed to use. Although she's improved with regards to graphing equations, finding slope, etc, she still has trouble with things like systems of equations. I imagine that math will always be her biggest challenge, but she makes up for it in her other subjects.

The student and I had a great time working with electricity.  She seems to really have enjoyed making circuits to see how electricity works and what electricity can flow through.  Using pennies and paperclips seemed to really fascinate her.  I think that was a hit.  Next week we will work on American History.  I will look for a hands on activity that will interest her.

We also talked about finding the degree of the term and the degree of the polynomial. We also talk about function notation where he had to substitute a number in for a variable and solve the function. We also talked about simplifying exponents. We talked about the rules: product rule, quotient rule, power rule, and negative and zero rule. He did a good job today. Just needs to practice.

Today with the student we reviewed all the assignments that I had given him over the break. He had to write a compare and contrast essay about two of his favorite books and a response essay to a short story. He also had an assignment working on structuring different sentences from the same set of fragments, and also editing several paragraphs with errors in punctuation, homophones, capitalization, conjunctions, etc. He did a very good job on the editing,  but he still has issues coming up with different and non-repetitive ways to pattern sentences.

The student has his chemistry final on Friday, so we went over the comprehensive review for the exam. The student started in the middle of the semester, so he wanted to focus on the earlier material. We started off with energy concepts, terms, equations. We reviewed terms like exothermic/endothermic reactions, how to graph the energy levels, how to indicate/calculate work/energy in regards to a system, and enthalpy/entropy. We then moved onto to bonding types/energy. We reviewed covalent, ionic, and polar bonds and some of their properties.   Overall, the student is doing very well.
