Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we discussed reading academic articles. We uncovered that reading academic articles from first word to last is not the best way to read a scholarly article. We discussed each section of an academic article and found that it will be easiest to read this type of text by starting with the title, abstract, and introduction; then, read the conclusion. Next, look for pertinent information in the findings section. For additional sources, read reference list and literature review. Next week, we are going to read an example academic article closely. We will then begin a rhetorical reading response to the article, which includes a precis (summary), a personal response, and an analysis. We will work on this essay response in the following weeks to learn how to read closely and analyze the text. This will be written in standard English. The student grasped the concepts discussed during this session well. She participates willingly and happily. She is not struggling with anything in her English class at this time, but if she does come across an issue in class, we will postpone the above schedule to work on any material from her high school class. I did not send her home with any additional work as she has a large amount of homework for her classes at school."
"Today, we looked at her first personal essay for me on the necessity of failure. It came out really well, and we discussed the strengths. For her homework, she has to track stories in a business newspaper on goods and services, commodities, big construction, and shipping. She knows that in order to have good original ideas and examples she has to read and build her knowledge. I am also sending her exercises on subordination to do."
"We worked on identifying subjects and predicates as well as determining sentences vs fragments and the four types of sentences."
