Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did extensive practice on CR and did some tricks to boost his vocabulary. I read his essay, which he still needs to polish. I left him with work for Wednesday. It feels like we had a breakthrough, today."
"We spent all of this session working on the essay section of the SAT. The student writes well on a sentence by sentence level and has a strong vocabulary. We began class by reviewing the essay he had written for his practice exam and talked about how to tighten up his essay by creating a more complex thesis, reorganizing some of the content and by having a "hook" to grab readers' attention in the introduction. After reviewing the essay, I went over strategies for moving from question to position to thesis to actually writing the essay. In order to give him a sense of how this process worked, I had him practice it with an actual essay question. He took a position on a question, developed it into a thesis, and came up with supporting examples. From there, we talked about how he would organize the examples he had into body paragraphs and how he could transition smoothly from one part of his essay to another. Finally, we discussed the qualities of a strong conclusion and he came up with a few sentences that could serve as the foundation of a conclusion to an essay on the topic we were working on."
"This was the last session with the students before their exam. I brought a review of all major concepts and problem types and went through it to practice strategies for the Writing, Reading, and Math sections of the SAT. They have become confident in all areas."
