"We reviewed an exam the student had taken on analyzing arguments. We reviewed satire, as well as analyzing political cartoons."
"For our final session, we worked on test-taking skills, in preparation for the students' upcoming exam. I went over test taking strategies - how to eliminate choices in multiple choice, looking for clues in the way the question is phrased, etc. The aspect of the test the students were most concerned about was the timed writing portion, so we focused on this. I went over 5 paragraph essay structure for an expository and persuasive essay, and had the students practice writing thesis statements and coming up with supportive argument. I also went over personal essay and narrative essay prompts, showing how the structure could be modified to fit these types of essays, and showed the students examples of essays that had been written well or poorly, using these prompts. I discussed the student's overall progress and encouraged them to take practice tests and write practice essays on their own."
"We discussed the student's goals for this school year. Her academic goals are to get low A's in all of her courses and to be moved up to one of two advanced courses in her 9th grade year. She also has the athletic goal of making it to the junior Olympics in swimming. She had an English paragraph to write about her summer reading book. We discussed the book (it is a current popular teen book) and how the society of the book is different than her own. We brainstormed some ideas and then she wrote the paragraph. As she wrote, I looked over it for spelling and grammatical issues. Once she started writing, she did a very good job with the assignment."
"Today, the student and I worked through his homework, punctuated by an awesome drum duet in the basement...this system of working hard, rewarding with a fun study-break, and then working again until the end of the session seems to really work for both his focus, as well as his comfortability and happiness working with me as a tutor."
"Today, the student continued to develop the character she is writing about. She wrote about him going to the doctor and getting a cast on his arm. Also, we worked on multiplication, place value, and factors. We studied biological classification in science (vertebrates and invertebrates)."
