Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began by discussing her previous experience with the admissions test, what review she has done thus far for her test date on August 15, and what she is looking to gain from these sessions. She took the test previously and scored a 26, which she would like to improve upon significantly. She feels that her weakest area is organic chemistry in addition to some weaknesses in general chemistry. I provided a biology passage, which she completed and answered most of the questions correctly. However, she struggled on an organic chemistry passage so we reviewed SN1 SN2 E1 and E2 mechanisms and rates. This is something we will focus on. We made her a schedule for the next three weeks of her studying and we finished with a verbal passage that she answered all the questions correctly on. She has a good strategy of note-taking for verbal reasoning!"
"The student completed yet another complete practice exam. It's the third test in a row she scored 32 or above, so I believe she is ready to take the actual exam, which she is doing this Friday. We went through the whole test question by question, and the only subjects she had trouble with were Physics and Organic Chemistry, but the real test now has less Organic Chemistry."
"Problem areas on the test included acid/base equations, light/optics, and circuits. We discussed these problems and how to work through them, and followed up by reviewing the concepts behind circuits and fluids. The student aims to take another test between lessons, but may soon focus more on the college test problems as he gets closer to his actual test on August 7th."
"Before this session, the student scored a 27 on her most recent practice test, which is the highest score she has received yet! During this session we went through the physical sciences section of the practice test and reviewed principles such as intermolecular forces, electrophilic versus nucleophilic substitution, thermal energy transfer, and Newtonian mechanics. This is test week for her, so she is cutting down on her studying time and will be ready to take the test on Friday!"
"The student has put a lot of effort into the first part of Physics studying, kinematics. We did some refreshing in mathematics but she has seen a lot of this before. We covered what to memorize in trigonometry, the quadratic equation, and some background in calculus. I addressed some of the problems she had in working with vectors and forces, but overall her conceptual understanding in Physics is strong. We did an experimental passage in Physics and many other questions. She has also been progressing well in Verbal Reasoning strategy which will give her an advantage as she does more section tests. I advised her to do 1 passage a day."
"Tonight was my first meeting with the student. We began by discussing the things he's done so far in preparation, his overall goals, and the materials he has remaining. We briefly went over some questions from the online tutoring diagnostic. Sentence Correction was our major topic. We looked at a several questions, walking through the grammar rules and splits that appear in the questions, finding the combination of both that would allow him to arrive at the answer. We also went over specific grammar content, including a few idiom issues, parallelism, and clause organization. He's going to take a test from the GMAT prep before we meet again, so we can get a good gauge on where he currently is."
