Today we covered the student's exam preparation for Thursday. The concepts we covered varied from calculating the maximum area given fence length, to calculating the functional differential. Odd functions had to be recognized as well as even, based on exponents of monomials. We discussed strategies, including finding the multiplicity of a root of a polynomial equation by taking a square root of the constant coefficient. Another strategy was to always write the problem down before trying to solve it, so one gets a good feeling for it, and a different visual. The student is well organized and is intent on passing the test with flying colors. She is tenacious in writing the steps to the solution down so she can easily reproduce them on the exam. Since most of the test questions are multiple choice, we also discussed using elimination as a test strategy.

We went over piecewise functions. The student really just needed a more detailed definition and proper way to approach them. Once I broke down the functions to their bare components, he was able to understand how they worked. By then, he had an easy time plugging in values, finding intercepts, domain and range. He had trouble with graphing and deciphering functions from graphs, but a lot of the problem stemmed from him not willing to put in the work. I supervised the first set of questions to make sure he could get used to the amount of work involved. By the end of the session, he was able to do his homework assignment on his own. He takes his final next Friday.

We worked on review problems for the student's exam. We started by reviewing the definition of logarithm and how to identify the asymptotes on their graphs. I emphasized that changing it into an exponential form makes it much easier to deal with. We reviewed some definitions that helped her understand what problems were asking for. She knew how to work out those problems once she identified what was being asked for her. Then we spent a good amount of time working with complex numbers. I explained to her what the exponential form of a complex number is and how to use it. With this she was able to understand the solutions to certain problems and see that the solutions were not complicated. She still needs to process this information and apply it by herself. She will work on some problems by herself tonight so she can practice. Tomorrow we'll continue reviewing for her exam.
