Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I spoke with the student's mother last night prior to today's 10:00AM session via email and changed todays duration to be 1:30. Today we reviewed for his biology midterm, date of exam is TBD. We reviewed through the provided outline. We covered during today's session the following: Biology Vocabulary Biology Organ - Tissue - Cell Characteristics of life - Organization, Reproduction, growth and development Qualitative color, odor, sound texture. Quantitative measurements Theory Constant Observed Prediction data Conclusion Methods of Biology Scientific method Controlled Experiment Scientific tools Theories and Laws Impact of Pectinase and Cellulose on Apple Juice Production The nature of Biology Section 1.3 2 kinds of research - qualitative and quantitative Realm of science Pure science vs. applied science Technology What is a polymer? Synthetic polymers Plastic from plants plastic from fungi plastic from bacteria plastic from plastic For each topic we discussed the definitions, discussed examples, and created comparison/differences. He did a nice job digesting this information, and actively participated throughout the lesson plan. He did not show any true signs of struggle today. I provided him better definition for the multi levels of organization for a living thing, by using my own class lectures as a substitute form of study for that particular topic. He was able to better understand this topic with illustration. I suggested that he create his own outline (which can closely follow the one his mom made) and should at least cover all the material we covered leading up to the different themes of biology. He is able to recall information quite well, he just needs to learn how to start applying definitions (application style questions). Today was a good session. He should review / skim through the material prior to going into the session, just to get a better concept on the more challenging topics prior to us covering them during the session."
"We first discussed the planner worksheets I had sent earlier this week. She is showing she needs assistance with organizational skills and her Family and Consumer Science (FACS) Class based on her latest progress report. She and I discussed her efforts and the results. She attempted the cinnamon roll recipe and was not successful due to a lack of yeast. I informed that even ingredients that may not require a high volume/quantity may still be essential to the quality of the baked dish. I instructed her to continue reviewing the relevant materials for her upcoming FACS class. I also asked her to fill out a new daily planner sheet for tomorrow, and to begin planning for the weekly planner sheet. We then proceeded to review a grammar worksheet on compound subjects and predicates based on my assessment of her writing from her book report submissions. I then finally asked her to review the latest book report submission and complete a new grammar worksheet for next Saturday."
"The student is really prepared to go into the new semester. We went through all of his teachers' websites to find all of the posted upcoming assignments and worked out a plan to stay on top of all those assignments. He finished a good part of his work while I was with him today. He is optimistic and positive about his abilities to start strong this semester. I look forward to seeing what his teachers assign this week and how he handles new assignments."
"Tonight the student and I reviewed some English and reading material, in preparation for the assessment exam. Being that he has been testing, I brought over some study materials. He was very attentive and did really well on the assignments. Each time we work together, I feel more and more comfortable and confident in his abilities. He is a very smart kid and puts in 100% all of the time. We discussed his performance on the first half of his science test and he believes he did really well. It's a joy working with him. Next time we meet, we will continue to review for the assessment exam."
"Student #1 and I spent our session on test review in order for her to learn the concepts she had questions on from her past tests. We worked on more number sentences, subtracting with borrowing, and learned how to write a check. She is a very apt pupil. Student #2 had a shorter lesson today as he is having standardized exams in school. We took our session to review the 6 and 7 times-tables. We will review those and complete 8s with a refresher on 9s next session (as he will still be in testing). Both students had very productive sessions and I definitely saw gains in the grades student #2 brought home! He got As on all of his reading and English worksheets and did fairly well on his vocab test."
"Today, the student practiced reading comprehension by reading a short and answering multiply choice questions. He also practiced solving word problems that included the subtraction, addition, multiplication and division of fractions. Then, he practiced using the correct pronouns in sentences."
