Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the reading comprehension portions of the ISEE lower level. The student needed help mostly with understanding the passage and what he was reading. The student had an open minded and positive approach towards the material. I did review some strategies for better understanding the passage and tackling the reading comprehension section as a whole, mainly focusing on how much time he has to focus on reading and answer questions respectively. I left him with extra practice on the website."
"The student and I continued to work on the Quantitative Reasoning section, specifically Geometry, Measurement and Probability. She knows what the word symmetry means but she was not familiar with lines of symmetry. We did a lesson on lines of symmetry with various shapes and she could successfully answer the questions about lines of symmetry. We then worked on graphing points because she had never seen a graph before or plotted points. She seemed to grasp the idea but I will be sending her more problems to practice. She understands the concepts of Area and Perimeter but struggled with more complicated shapes. I then showed her how to break complicated shapes down into familiar shapes and add the area. She will need some more practice with Area but overall she understood. In addition, we covered Reading Comprehension and she excelled. She is a very strong reader and uses strategies such as context clues and eliminating irrelevant information. Our next session will focus on the Mathematics Achievement section as she needs some practice with fractions, division of large numbers, and multiplying decimals."
"We reviewed whole numbers, including definitions of commonly used terms, writing numbers on standard and long form, number lines, basic operations, and order of operations. He verbally confirmed that he understood the concept and was able to answer questions correctly that I was giving him. I introduced the concept of root words. We need to continue working on this to fully grasp the concept of using root words to assist in learning/deciphering new vocabulary words. We brainstormed ideas for essay writing and talked about making outlines as a way to organize thoughts. The key here will be to get the student to be able to organize his thoughts into an essay format."
