"The student worked on a couple of exercises covering tense consistency and a discussion of verb forms."
"We went over the short duration essay the student had written for the session. We read through it while I noted points that needed to be revisited. We concentrated on her introduction to see how she could polish it up, make it more accessible for readers, and deepen and connect her thoughts. I am going to send her web links that cover active versus passive sentences, strong verbs, and how to stay away from ending sentences with prepositions. We talked about how colloquial expressions in writing make it hard for some readers to understand a text. We also discussed the importance of taking the reader's knowledge into account when writing. That is an element of style with which most, if not all, writers struggle. It is hard to know how much information to include. I am teaching the student that it is better for now to over-explain than under-explain."
"The student and I started by going over her new scheduling practices. She said that she did try the scheduling out of her work time a bit over the first week of school, and that it did help. We sat down and scheduled out her work time for Friday and Sunday night, which also helped give her a better idea of how to schedule for the week to come. The student's assignment over the week was to get in the habit of scheduling things in advance so that she can be prepared at all times. The student also asked me to help with the ongoing work to improve her work efficiency. We focused on note taking for this week. I showed her the method of reading a small amount of text, looking away from the page, and then summarizing in her own words. In practice it seemed to help a good deal with recall, but still takes more time than she would prefer. We will work in the coming weeks to help her take effective AND concise notes. We are also going to add math in coming sessions in addition to our ongoing work on the student's efficiency. She seems less stressed recently, so I feel we are definitely making progress."
