Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, we worked on division. The student did fairly well; however, he was completing the problems in a way that may cause errors, so we worked on a more efficient way to solve the division problems. We also worked on division word problems and talked about "key" words that will alert him that he needs to divide. The session went very well."
"The student and I reviewed and completed her homework tonight, which covered square roots and completing the square problems. She seemed to have a good understanding of the concepts after we did some review. We went ahead in her notes and began learning about imaginary numbers and adding, subtracting, and multiplying them. Overall, good session."
"Tonight the student and I worked on his factoring homework. I also went on to teach him about factoring perfect squares and the difference of squares. He did very well with both of them-- especially considering it was new material. We spent the last few minutes working on a study guide for his exam. We'll continue working on that next week."
"Today was my first session with the student and we covered the first chapter of her Algebra text book, which she will be tested on tomorrow. She seemed to understand the material pretty well, only doubting herself when she was unsure about a method or a problem. I think that so far in the curriculum, she is not lacking skill. With some encouragement and support, she will be a very good math student. I left her to read over the chapter sections in the textbook, especially making sure she understands the example problems, if she has time before her test tomorrow."
"Today the student and I finished her homework. She was working on addition and estimation, which she did amazing on! She recently received a 95% on her practice test which is showing great improvement. We also went over some word problems that I came up with because she says she struggles a little bit on differentiating adding or subtracting on longer word problems. She is a great student to work with and a very hard worker!"
"Today the student and I worked on graphing quadratic functions. He said that he understood the standard form much better than the vertex form, so we spent a good deal of time on vertex form. He seemed to be comfortable with graphing once we talked through it. He has a whole sheet of practice problems that he said he would work on to make sure he understood. I am really happy with his progress!"
"We covered multiplying/dividing rational expressions, restrictions, and binomial expansion. The student did really well with every concept. She score on her last test was an improvement from her other test scores. We spent some time going over some of the mistakes she on the test as well."
"We went over optimization problems. The student was concerned with optimizing cylinders so we did a number of questions that involved cylinders. She has a test tomorrow. I left her with a challenging optimization problem."
"Worked with the student on her getting ready for fifth grade math packet. We practiced some more on converting between fractions and decimals, as well as comparing fractions with different denominators and comparing negative numbers. She did a great job."
"Today we covered conditional probability and Bayes' Theorem. Once she works through a problem and understands the process, the student doesn't generally have any issues applying the concepts to other problems. She was able to complete the homework assignment without any major issues."
"The student and I practiced solving rational equations tonight. Other than a few arithmetic errors, he seemed to get the concept pretty quickly. We then took a few minutes to look ahead at the chain rule for differentiation."
"Met with the student to cover topics in her algebra 2 class in preparation for an upcoming exam. We covered manipulating functions involving absolute values. We were able to clear up questions she had about how the functions behaved and she stated that she felt much more prepared for the test."
