Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student re-did the problem he got wrong from last week and completed the Chapter 6 and Chapter 5 review. We went through the problems that he re-did and, although he did better, there were still 2 or 3 that he did not get right. It was the same for the Chapter 6 review problems. There was an improvement from last week to this week, but he still needs a lot of practice to ensure he can work through several problems in a row correctly. We spent the majority of the session going over his Chapter 6 review problems. The last 20 minutes, he wanted to go over some problems that he got stuck on in the Chapter 5 review assignment. I gave him about approximately 40 homework problems to do for next week. The problems are spread out throughout two of the books he has and cover radicals, factoring, combining like terms, and computing problems with exponents. He will be quizzed on them at the beginning of next week's session. I told him I expect him to text me or call me throughout the week when he gets stuck."
"We did more word problems with mass balances. The student is doing much better with equations now but struggles finding the right one with word problems. We are working on it and he is coming along."
"Reviewed Chapter 6 & 7 - Ratios, Proportions, and Algebraic Fractions. Completed Homework. Prepared for Quiz."
"The student told me she got 100% on her last quiz. Hurray! I then had her do the end of chapter practice problems to make sure she's up to speed. She's doing really well with graphing and slope triangles. She's still having some problems with solving equations and order of operations (when exponents are involved), so I'll keep checking in with her on those."
"We went back over the student's piecewise functions practice problems from the last session. She seemed to do well with them. We then started going over her study guide for the next test. Some of it she was able to do without a problem, some of the questions she just needed a little hint to start and then she was fine, and some of the questions we needed to go all of the way through. We will continue to touch on the problem types that caused her trouble next session."
"In this session, we worked on questions of percent changes, including sales tax and discount. The student seems to work best when he can develop a pattern for a certain type of question. We were able to establish a pattern within sales tax and discount -- they start the exact same way. The only difference is at the end, where you add the tax on and subtract the discount away. Every problem began with a proportion, which he would set up based on the percent. We also practiced converting between decimal, percent, and fractions, as well as a shortcut of multiplying/dividing by powers of ten (10, 100, 1000), which involved moving the decimal place over. We also practiced rounding to a certain number of decimal places."
