The skills your child builds with their tutor will also continue to help them as they move on to more advanced courses, and when they need to take those important standardized tests, including the Measurements of Student Progress and their End-of-Course exams.

Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Kirkland, WA Science tutoring
Yesterday the student and I continued to cover interactions of light with matter. Specifically electronic structure, energy transitions, and correlating light properties to energy. She is much more comfortable. I hope and plan to continue this trend next week, in preparation for her test. She didn't struggle with a lot of the core concepts, but rather small details in the problem. We need to work hard on solving this to really improve her standing in this class. We will also work on increasing the speed with which she identifies problems and goes about solving them. I left her no extra practice, but she will send me practice problems next week, so that I can make similar problems for practice before the test. I have no concerns from the session.

The student had a test recently. The exam did not resemble previous exams, seemed to require large amounts of extrapolation, and included material from his labs that he was not expecting. If the results are as poor as he anticipates, we will come up with a way to overcome this next time. We moved onto the topics of entropy and Gibbs free energy, defining both terms. Calculations of Gibbs from entropy, enthalpy, and temperature were explained. We then related Gibbs to the equilibrium constant, which allowed him to tie Gibbs to equilibrium concentrations of species. Lastly, we went over deviations from standard Gibbs free energy, and calculated Gibbs when presented with deviations from standard conditions. Overall, he did an excellent job answering questions.

The student and I spent the hour and a half doing a stoichiometry quiz from her online chemistry module. She has picked up the concepts involved quickly, and is able to learn and strives to understand the content. I recommended she watch specific instructional videos as a resource to supplement her reading material based on what she has been learning and will continue to learn.

Since this was a session during a break, we reviewed several topics, including: Balancing Chemical Equations, Trends of Periodic Table, Molecular Theory, Energy and Entropy. I had the student do about 10 problems on Balancing Equations, Drawing Organic Structure and some practice assessment questions, that she did previously, that I checked and explained to her the ones that were wrong.

We made her flash cards to study and understand different cations, anions, acids, bases, and salts and went over them. I taught her how to use flash cards optimally. I also helped her calculate her grade to date and put together a study plan for the next three weeks so she could meet her GPA goal for the class. We covered acid/base chemistry and molecular orbitals (including hybridization orbitals) in more depth. She is now ahead of her class in the reading.

In today's session the student completed two chemistry worksheets -- one on states of matter and one on measuring volumes. He did very well with this material. He also did a problem set of 18 for his math class.
