How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Phonics, one of the instruction methods used to teach children to read, is usually used in kindergarten through second grade, but for students with dyslexia and other reading disorders, it can be used with great benefit into the upper elementary grades and even beyond elementary school. Improving reading skills through phonics leads to try to improved spelling, writing, and most importantly, comprehension.

Phonics instruction is based on students learning the sounds that match individual letters or groups of letters. This auditory element would best be taught by a professional instructor who can introduce the phonics lessons in the order that will be the most effective for the student. Varsity Tutors could help you find a qualified, professional phonics tutor in Kirkland.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Kirkland, WA Phonics tutoring
The student was preparing for a test on the first act of her play, so we reviewed characters, facts about the character's life, and important quotations. I found her knowledge in the first two categories solid to begin with, and I gave her some strategies for identifying important quotations by clues as to character. After that, we rehearsed that portion of the test as I made my way through the first act, reading selections of lines that contain clues as to the characters who speak them. She pretty much aced the exercise.

We opened the session with making up sentences about what the student did the previous day. We went over the spelling mistakes, then looked at his homework, which he did perfectly. Next, we worked on the 'to be' verb. I explained contractions and we practiced on more sentence writing. We reviewed the parts of speech, then did an exercise on proper nouns. He is good at identifying such and distinguishing between variations. We finished with an alphabetical order exercise and more spelling. I gave him a small reading assignment as homework since we didn't do any in the lesson.

I started with a graphic of letters and had him connect consonants and vowels that made words. This was modified into writing a letter and having the other person finish a word. Then we played the game of "I'm going to _______ and taking a _______." We used all letters of the alphabet through "Q" before we ran out of time.
