Session Summaries by Graduate Test Prep Tutors

The student was able to review his most recent test and do an additional set of logic games from PrepTest 1, and we used those to frame our discussion today. We discussed a couple of techniques he'll be using in future games: linked chains for loose sequencing games, linked spaces in distribution (slot-based grouping) games, and repeated entities in distribution games. He is going to do at least one practice test this week and one additional section of Logic Games in addition to working forward in his prep book.

We briefly reviewed chapter 5 and then focused our attention on the basics of conditional reasoning and diagramming. We reviewed conditional reasoning concepts in detail and completed several drills. Homework includes finishing chapter 6 and all of the questions and drills in the chapter, as well as completing through page 18 of the workbook. The student's comprehension is very good.

We spent two hours doing sequencing LGs. The student is doing great with accuracy; she just occasionally has to remind herself of what the question is asking as well as what the specific rules are saying. Overall, I think she's in a great place for the June test!

The student has just started adding a time-pressure element to his studying. In an effort to improve his speed and comprehension on logical reasoning questions, we spent this session focusing mostly on the prephrasing technique - articulating a possible answer choice (usually an assumption or flaw from the argument) before even looking at the answers. It isn't always a sure thing, but prephrasing can usually give you a helpful lens through which the answer choices become clearly correct or incorrect. I am encouraged that his scores on his most recent practice test did not vary wildly now that he has started working within the required time limit. He is eager to improve his study habits and self-discipline so he can continue to increase his scores before the June LSAT.

We started in on arguments today and introduced necessary and sufficient assumption questions. For next week, go through the arguments section in your review book, as far as you get, but at least through these two question types.

The student and I continued our discussion of the logic games section today, specifically focusing on how to include secondary and tertiary deductions into our game diagrams based on the conditions governing the game. We covered both strict and loose sequencing as well as selection games, working on skills such as annotating, using common shorthand, following a set pattern for deconstructing games, and using formal logic to rewrite conditional statements. He did very well with the material, and has a strong sense of how to develop effective diagrams for the games. For extra practice, he is going to be completing his review of the logic games sections and applying his skills to a set of six games. I think our biggest win from today's session was unpacking a very difficult sequencing question from our last session.
