During this session, we went over two topics in the physics section of the MCAT. The first topic was on the mechanics of motion, specifically the two topics of momentum and impulse. We also discussed the two general types of collisions that occur, and how these two differ from each other. We then solved problems that involved both of these types of collisions. Lastly, we moved on to the topic of optics and reviewed how mirrors function and the different types of mirrors, as well as the types of lenses and the topic of optics.

The student and I spent our time going over a number of different topics. We first began by going over the most recent biological sciences section test that he took looking at why he got questions wrong and for any trends. We then spent a good portion of time reviewing molecular biology and genetics materials including replication and transcription. We then discussed how this relates to and applies to the cell cycle. We then related this to mitosis and meiosis as well as differentiation and embryology. He seemed to gain a deeper understanding and comprehension of these ideas by discussing them in more detail.

The student and I split our time between going through questions she had for physics, general chemistry, and verbal passages as well as walking through some science passages. Additionally we reviewed the hormone fluctuation as part of reproductive biology. I think the walk through of science passages was really helpful for her. One of her main goals is to learn how to pick out pieces of relevant information from the passage paragraphs and ignore everything else. I'm hoping that this passage reading combined with our work in verbal and speed reading will make her a more efficient and accurate test-taker.

The student's skills continue to improve and, more importantly, he's not losing ground as he improves additional skills--the gains he gets stay even when he turns attention away to learn something new. Endurance and timing continue to be challenges, but will get better as time progresses. Today we reviewed Formal Logic, the four basic rule types and what they allow and block, and used that in a couple of Logic Games from his most recent test.
