Biology is a fascinating scientific subject that covers everything from cell division and reproduction to evolution and ecology. If you're planning a career in medicine, research, or even botany, you're going to need a solid foundation in the basics of biology. Whether you want to become an expert on this topic or you're struggling through a required biology class, a tutor could help you do well and feel comfortable with the material. Falling behind in biology can be dangerous because every new concept that's learned is built from the last concept that was taught. We started reviewing for the final by going over the list of things that the student needs to know (it's material form the whole year). This student knows a lot of basic chemistry. She is very adept at the calculations, but we will work on understanding exactly the steps necessary. We spent the time going over all her class notes on thermodynamics and equilibrium and also gave a little attention to the Ksp. We also went through about 25 questions on the chemistry "Olympiad" published by the ACS.

The student and I did practice with gas law problems today. She was familiar with all of the equations, but was confused as to when to use them. She was also unsure of what was meant by "STP." We worked through one worksheet strictly dedicated to Charles' law and then worked on a worksheet that required the use of PV=nRT as well as the combined gas law. Finally, I wrote out 3 problems for her to solve. She was able to solve these problems correctly and identify which equation to use. I also wrote out all of the equations and constants on one sheet for her to use as a tool and study guide.

The student is still in the chapter that discusses solubility. She had a worksheet to work through that had a fill in the blank for the definition of some of the key terms (e.g. solute, solvent, miscible, heterogeneous, etc.) and some multiple choice to test the understanding of the content. Finally, she had a solubility graph and was asked questions related to the graph. She didn't always seem to think through the questions to answer on her own, but as we talked about it more, she was able to arrive at the correct answer. She does well with questions related to the solubility graph.
