Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Kirkland, WA Algebra tutoring
During my session with the student we worked on solving systems of equations. In the beginning of the session, we worked a few problems which covered all the material he has seen so far this semester. I felt that he was very comfortable with the material, and was enjoying it. After the review we solved about ten different systems of equations, and I showed him solving such a system translates into determining the point of intersection of two points.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting with the student. I learned about what her goals were for math and decided what sessions would look like in the future (30 min review, 30 min new concepts, 30 min practical applications). Today we looked at ch 1,4, and 5 of her practice book. We will be starting on ch 6 when we meet on Dec 2nd.

The student has a test coming up on Monday, so today we reviewed Chapter 4. The topics we focused on were graphing quadratic functions, factoring, and solving quadratic equations. We have covered all of these before, but he needed to review them with me first before he remembered how to do everything. After some practice, he seemed to have a better grasp of how to solve these types of problems. For the last half hour, we worked on chemistry, since the student is not able to meet with his chemistry tutor this week. Biochemistry was the main topic -- we discussed proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

Went over a math test that the student had made some errors on. Her proportions were correct, and the errors that she had made were just because she tried to simplify the proportion before she cross-multiplied. The rest of the time, we went through a math practice section of the SSAT that she is taking in January.

This session focused on building a quadratic equation from provided data points or converting a quadratic into vertex form and graphing the parabola. We reviewed through her entire homework set and she completed a challenging physics problem about a ball being tossed in the air. We created an outline of the rules for parabolas - how to identify vertex, axis of symmetry, direction of opening, and the solution set if the problem is presented as an inequality.

On our first session, student 1 and I went over how to complete the square and how to use that to solve for x. We also went over how to put it in vertex form and how to define what the vertex is. She seemed comfortable once we reviewed for a while. As for student 2, we went over how to plug in a number in a function and find the output. He also saw how to use the previous answers to find the answer to a function that has f(n-1) within it. Overall, this was a good session.
